Singer and self acclaimed ‘Mama Africa’, Yemi Alade is one of the very few female singers who has tried to venture into the fashion world. At the height of her career, especially when her single, ‘Johnny’ was getting serious airplay and was on the lips of virtually everyone, the University of Lagos graduate, seized the opportunity her new found fame presented, to expand her frontiers by launching her clothing and jewelry line which didn’t waste time to gain traction. First was her jewelry collection, YAC jewelry, a range of costume jewelry which she debuted under the platform of fashion retailer, Bland 2 Glam. Next was her clothing line which she aptly named House of Tangerine (H.O.T), due to her love for colours. This was launched in 2016, a year after the jewelry collection was launched. Yemi used the opportunity the 2016 edition of the Africa Fashion Week, Lagos, presented, to showcase her first ever collection at the grand finale of the three day event. The fun and colourful collection was designed in partnership with fashion designer, Iconic Invanity under the designer’s diffusion line, D.N.A. However, since the huge launch of both the clothing and jewelry line which even had Senator Florence Ita-Giwa in attendance, not much has been heard about them. Lately, Yemi prefers to wear brands other than hers, prompting one to wonder if the two fashion ventures were just a fluke and had nothing to do with her passion in the first place.
