Pastor John Kumuyi, the first son of Pastor Williams Folorunso Kumuyi, the convener of Global Crusade with Kumuyi (GCK), and the founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, like most offsprings of clergymen has embraced full time ministry just like his dad.
However, not as a preacher, but as a gospel minister. John made his debut appearance as a guest music Minister during the recently held ‘Global Crusade With Kumuyi’ and Annual December Retreat at the Deeper Life Conference Centre in Lagos. The younger Kumuyi is based in the United States.
Back in 2013, the younger Kumuyi sparked controversy when he walked the aisle with Love Odih in a ‘society’ wedding in Jamaica. The bride, decked in a flowing white gown, a shift from the traditional Deeper Life wedding dress, wore makeup on her day. The church operates a strict regimen on ceremonies which outlaws even video coverage during nuptials.
John and his bride were driven in an ash-coloured limousine, creating a buzz on social media with people wondering whether the church had relaxed its rather conservative rules or their leader’s son had become exempt to them.
Realizing the embarrassment he had caused the church, he apologized profusely a year after, stating himself and his wife did not intend their act or omissions in any way to undermine the great work that God has done through the Deeper Christian Life Ministry through his father.
The apology, however, did little to assuage the anger of the church’s elders, including the groom’s father, who recommended that the couple be placed under discipline. The groom’s father even offered to resign his position just to demonstrate that there is no double standard in the church and that leaders should lead by example.
