Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State who had earlier placed a ban on #EndSars protests in the state has made a surprising U-turn, joining the protesters to demand for an end to police brutality and complete police reforms.
Wike in an announcement on Monday evening conveyed via his information commissioner, Paulinus Nsirim, warned residents against coming coming out for protest adding that since the Inspector General of Police had already disbanded the dreaded Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARs, there was no reason to embark on any protest.
Wike said that anyone caught protesting would be arrested by law enforcement agencies.
However, thousands of youth disregarded his directive and trooped out enmasse to stage a protest against SARs.
In a bid to disabuse the minds of the protesters that he was on the side of the unit, the governor took time to address them when they approached the government house, saying he has always been speaking out against the atrocities of the dreaded unit, adding that they were responsible for theft and kidnappings in Rivers State.
