You may wonder what a vaginal steam is or why it should be of any concern to you as a woman. The truth is, this practice has been around for thousands of years but it has just become popular over the past few years! Thanks to our love for celebrity trends, reality shows and fashion TVs.

Vaginal steaming, also known as yoni steaming, is an old health practice whereby a woman squats or sits over steaming water containing herbs such as mugwort, rosemary, wormwood, lavender and basil. It is described in spas as an ancient Korean treatment for the female sex organ and it is claimed to have several benefits.

It is said to balance the female hormones, cleanse and revitalize the uterus, reduce the discomfort, bloating and tiredness associated with menstruation, regulate irregular menstrual cycles, treat yeast infections, decrease the menstrual blood flow, increase fertility, relieve symptoms of menopause, treat endometriosis, speed up after-birth recovery process, aid sexual arousal, amongst others.

You do not need to pay thousands of naira to have a vaginal steam session at a spa; there are simple DIY tips that will work for you.

Here are five easy steps to have a vaginal steam right in the comfort of your home:

Step 1
Get a slatted chair or modified stool, a bowl, a blanket, ear peace and IPod, reading material and whatever else you may want in a comfortable location in your home.

 

Step 2
In a medium covered pot, pour 8 cups of water, preferably purified water. Place one handful of fresh herb(s) of your choice or 1/4 cup dried herbs into the water. Heat the content for 5 minutes.

 

Step 3
Turn off the heat, leave it covered, and steam for another five minutes, test how hot the steam is. Put the back of your forearm over the steam to test. Remember your genitals are very sensitive to heat; you do not want to burn them! Do not sit down until the steam is comfortable for you.


Step 4
Having done that, remove your underwear and every other clothing. Cover your entire lower half, all the way to the ground with the first blanket. Wrap the second blanket around the upper half of your body. Keep it wrapped around you to make you warm while listening to music or reading. You may decide to engage yourself or simply just meditate.


Step 5
Feel the warmth for about 10-12 minutes. If the content is getting cold, pour it away and pour another hot content into the bowl and sit over the steam again.
