The Senate yesterday issued a marching order to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to arrest the perpetrators of the New Year day killings in Benue state within 14 days. The Senate gave the order during plenary. The Senators for about four hours, deliberated on the unfortunate attacks carried out by suspected herdsmen in Benue state on January 1st that left 75 persons dead. The 75 persons were last Thursday, January 11th, given a mass burial.

The Senators during their debate on the insecurity in Nigeria, with particular reference to the Benue killings, called on President Buhari as the commander in Chief, to rise up and perform his statutory role to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians. The leadership of the senate led by Senate President, Bukola Saraki, later on had a closed door meeting with President Buhari at the presidential villa last night. Senate President told state house correspondents that the meeting with President Buhari was to brief him on the senate’s deliberations and resolutions regarding the security challenges in Nigeria.
