All hell broke loose when Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Sunday when in a world press conference, declared that his opponent, Jide Sanwo-Olu is not only an American felon but also unfit to hold any elective office. This is ahead of the state’s gubernatorial primary which was scheduled to take place on Monday October 1st but later postponed to Tuesday October 2nd, making it the second time the primaries have been rescheduled. The initial date was supposed to be on Sunday September 30

The incumbent in his speech said Babajide Sanwo-Olu was once arrested in the United States for spending fake dollars in a night club.  In addition, he said, Sanwo-Olu, who is being backed by APC national leader, Bola Tinubu and some special interests in the state, has psychiatric issues and is not well and therefore not a fit and proper candidate for the position of Lagos governor, Ambode said.
“He is an American felon who was arrested for spending fake US dollars in an American night club. He lacks competency and health wise, he has gone through mental rehabilitation.

The governor disclosed that Sanwo-Olu served time in US prisons in connection with a string of counterfeit bill-passing incidents in the country. He added that his challenger had undergone rehabilitation at the Gbagada General Hospital in Lagos. At the press conference at government house, Alausa, Lagos the governor said he is under no illusion about the battle ahead in the APC primary for governor, but said, “We shall overcome.”

Ambode, who has been under pressure to also step down, appealed to the leadership of the party in Lagos to do the right thing. He said his opponent is being pushed to do what he is not capable of
“We have never responded to the campaign of calumny on social media. We have one family in APC. The aspirant being put up to compete against us is not a fit and proper person to take this job. I have done everything in the last three and half years to serve people selflessly and to serve the poor.  I plead with our leaders to have a rethink, It is not about me, it is about the opportunity that APC has.”
