Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, has said that Celestine Omehia must refund the entitlements close to N695 million he wrongfully received as a former governor of the state for six months.

Wike said this in Port Harcourt, Rivers state capital on Friday, October 14.

Wike said that, “If the state house of assembly made a mistake, and they have now realised their mistake, what is wrong with that?

“I have signed the instrument of derecognition and Omehia seizes to exist as a former governor of Rivers state.”

The governor, when asked what will happen if Omehia fails to refund the entitlements he received, said that, “Omehia has to refund the N695 million he wrongfully received or must be ready to challenge us in court.

“The state attorney-general will advise us on what to do because we have a number of options to take.”

Recall that the Rivers state house of assembly, on October 6, withdrew its recognition of Celestine Omehia as a former governor of the state.

Omehia was governor of the state from May 29, 2007 to October 25, 2007, when he was removed by the supreme court, and replaced by Rotimi Amaechi as the rightful governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the time.

The motion to derecognise the Ikwerre local government area-born politician was moved by the leader of the house, Hon. Martin Amaewhule.

All 21 members present voted in support of the motion to remove Omehia from the list of the state former governors, and resolved to forward their resolution to Wike, for implementation.
