A policewoman who was accused of helping Evans the kidnapper escape justice in a 2006 robbery case has been arrested. The woman identified as Tina was until her arrest, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP). She was unveiled by a Special Investigation Panel (SIP) put together by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris to probe Chukwudumeje George Onwuamadike aka Evans the kidnapper’s 2006 arrest, transfer from Lagos State to Imo State and his eventual release.

After Evans was arrested last month, a senior police officer told reporters that his team had apprehended Evans in 2006 after a bank robbery. The officer claimed that Evans and his gang members had a gun battle at the National Theatre in Surulere, Lagos Mainland after a disagreement in sharing their loot which they got from attacking a commercial bank. According to the officer, Tina, who was a Superintendent of Police (SP) at that time, mounted pressure on them to release Evans and two of his members who had been arrested at that time, but they refused to grant her request.

The police officer who gave this revelation disclosed that seven members of Evans’ gang died in the shootout. How he knew Evans was the part of the gang, he said,
“If you look at his chest, I cannot remember whether it is the right or left side, there is a scar. It was as a result of the gunshot from his gang members that day. He bled and there was no way he could run away before the police came. The case was transferred to the Lagos state anti-robbery squad. We investigated and discovered that they were armed robbers. Evans the kidnapper led the team.

“We also went to Mbidi police station, Imo state, to carry out an investigation on them. We were able to arrest two other members of the gang. We then had five of them in police custody. But unable to secure their release, Tina went through Imo State Command, where a signal was sent for the transfer of the suspects. After this was revealed and thoroughly investigated, Tina was arrested. He said the police might soon release statement on the issue.

“I can tell you that Tina is not the woman’s real name but I won’t give you her name. I can also tell you she’s now a CSP and still in service. So many officers took part in that 2006/2007 release of Evans and they are being investigated, said a source close to The Nation. The panel has made progress and almost all of them have been identified. An official statement might be released by the authorities soon.”
