Police in Port Harcourt, Rivers state have advised that women not go into prostitution so they do not fall victim of a suspected ‘serial killer’ on the prowl in the city

Last month, police confirmed the killing of three young women in hotels in different parts of the city adding that two of them died of strangulation with white cloth around their neck.

Chuks Enwonwu, the number two police chief in Rivers State said this while speaking to women who were protesting the incessant killing at the police headquarters in the state. Eve though he didn’t confirm if the killings were as a result of a serial killer on the prowl, he asked the women to advice their fellow women.

“In as much as societal values are waning, you should educate and encourage your fellow women to shun prostitution because that is what makes them fall victim to this kind of crime.”

But Soibi Ibibo Jack who organized the protest said the women are concerned that the police chief described the victims of the ‘serial killer’ as prostitutes, adding that it wasn’t true. She also said that even though the said women were prostitutes, their lives matter as they are human beings.

Enwonwu told the women that the police has made some arrests concerning the matter, adding that investigation is still ongoing. He also said that the police has been having series of meetings with management of hotels in the state on ways to have a proper documentation of everyone who lodges in their hotel and for them to put cameras in place to capture people well so they know who comes and goes from their hotels.
