Two years after the campaign against a white dominated Oscars with the hashtag #Oscarssowhite, championed by actress, Jada Pinkett-Smith, this year’s Oscars was predominantly dominated by white nominees despite the twelve African Americans who were nominated in various categories, with only two out of the nine nominees winning an Oscar. While Jordan Peele who was nominated for best original screenplay, director and picture for his satirical horror film, ‘Get Out,’ became the first African American to win the original screenplay award, retired basket baller, Kobe Bryant’s ‘Dear Basketball,’ which he wrote, won best animated short film.

Hosted for the second time by talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel, at the Dolby Theatres, Los Angeles, this years’s show was not only the 90th anniversary of the prestigious award ceremony, it thankfully didn’t end on a dramatic note unlike last year where there was a mix up of envelopes bearing the winner of the biggest prize of the night. There was no ‘La La land/Moonlight’ situation. Ironically, the two veteran actors who presented the award at last year’s Oscars, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, were the same set of presenters who presented this year’s Best Picture award which was won by ‘The Shape of Water’.

Just like last year where the host, brought in random people from off the streets to meet with celebrities midway into the show, this year, Jimmy Kimmel surprised movie goers when midway into the show, he got some celebrities to accompany him to a theatre close by the award show venue, to appreciate them for taking time to go see movies at the cinemas. He made sure not to leave them empty handed as the celebrities distributed, candies, sandwiches and handburgers to the excited movie goers.
