Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director of the World Trade Organization received a tribute message from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to mark her name on the Time’s 100 most influential people.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are also on Time’s 2021 list of the 100 most influential people on the planet.
Time’s billed the royal couple “Icons,” on the list with a tribute penned by chef José Andrés of World Central Kitchen (WCK), highlighting their work at the Archewell Foundation.
“In a world where everyone has an opinion about people they don’t know, the Duke and Duchess have compassion for the people they don’t know,” the chef wrote. “They don’t just opine. They run toward the struggle”, he said in his tribute.
The Sussex couple also contributed to the Time’s list, as they served as tribute to follow honouree, Ngozi Okonlo- Iweala, the Director of WTO.
They wrote about the director in their tribute, “since becoming the Director-General of the World Trade Organization in March, Okonjo-Iweala has astutely been hailed for the groundbreaking nature of her appointment to the role; the first woman and the first African to assume the position. What further sets her apart, and makes her leadership all the more trailblazing, is her ability to see the COVID-19 pandemic as a crisis with significant implications for both health and economic security.”
The 18th annual list of influential people included 10 climate leaders, dozens of advocates, political leaders, 54 women and the youngest featured in the issues is 18-year-old Sunisa Lee. The oldest person in the 2021 issues is 78-year-old President Joe Biden.
Olympian Simone Biles, Apple CEO Tim Cook, showrunner Shonda Rhimes, NFL star Tom Brady and music producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz are included in the “Titans” section, while Oscar winner Kate Winslet, Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny, rapper Lil Nas X, actress Scarlett Johansson, Britney Spears and actor Jason Sudeikis made the “Artists” list. Country singer, Dolly Patton was designated an “icon”.
Grammy winner Billie Eilish was at the top of the “Pioneers” list alongside gymnast Sunisa Lee, civil rights attorney Ben Crump and fashion designer Aurora James.
The “Leaders” section saw the likes of President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Chinese politician Xi Jinping, former President Donald Trump and Okonjo-Iweala,
For the “Innovators” section billionaires Jensen Huang and Elon Musk and “Red Table Talk” stars Adrienne Banfield Norris, Willow Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith were listed.
