The Lagos State Government has suspended transport unionism at the seven branches of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in the Shogunle and Oshodi areas of the state.
This came on the heels of the murder of a popular union leader, Rasaq Bello, aka Hamburger who was the Chairman of the Motorcycle Operators’ Association of Lagos State, Oshodi chapter.
The suspension order was disclosed on Monday in Alausa, Ikeja, by the Acting Commissioner for Transportation, Anofiu Elegushi, who listed the branches affected to include LoB A, D, J and Oshodi A, B, C and D.
The acting commissioner stated that the determination to protect lives and property, while forestalling further breakdown of law and order, are the reason for the suspension.
He said while the order lasted, there would be no issuance of tickets or collection of money from commercial vehicles operating in the areas. Elegushi said, “The suspension will persist until peace is restored to the areas. The government will not hesitate to extend the ban to any other branch where violence erupts from union activities.”
The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Mr. Edgal Imohinmi, said an interim report of the investigation into the murder of Hamburger, which led to the fracas, would be ready within the week.
The state Chairman of NURTW, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, said the body would support any measure aimed at bringing peace back to the Shogunle and Oshodi areas.
