Former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio has lost his re election bid and will not be returning to the senate to represent Akwa Ibom north-west senatorial district. The senator, who contested under the All Progressives Congress (APC), lost to Chris Ekpenyong of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by a wide margin. He secured only 83,158 votes as against 118,215 votes of Ekpenyong.

Akpabio’s defeat was shocking to many being that the senator was believed to have a massive influence in the state. He had also resigned his position as the senate minority leader and joined the APC with a large number of supporters from the PDP. The senator is widely respected as one of the most influential politicians in Akwa Ibom and in the south-south region.

Like Akpabio, former governor of Benue State, George Akume will also not be returning to the senate as he equally lost his re election bid to represent Benue north-west senatorial district Orker Jev, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member in the house of representatives. Jev polled 157,726 against Akume’s 115,422 votes.

A two-term governor of Benue state, Akume was first elected into the senate in 2007. Akume is the third ex-governor and serving senator to lose reelection in 2019.

In the same vein, former Governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) lost his bid to get a seat in the hallowed chambers to represent Delta South senatorial race. The incumbent, Senator James Manager of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) beat Uduaghan silly by securing 258,812 votes. The former governor polled less than half of the figure with 125,776 votes.
