As part of his democracy day speech during the Democracy Day celebration at Eagle Square on Wednesday, President Muhammadu Buhari announved the renaming of Abuja National Stadium after the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, in honour of the winner of the freest and fairest democratic election in June 12 of 1993.

However, while some Nigerians commended Buhari for his gesture, not a few felt the act was that of misplaced priorities because the current decrepit state of the Abuja national stadium. Here are some of their reactions:

@chrireccollins, “PMB renamed a dilapidated, abandoned and non-functional Abuja stadium after MKO Abiola and people are happy, same people that almost killed GEJ and protested heavily when he (GEJ) renamed Unilag after MKO.”

@Arogbodovicent, “Eagle Square is more symbolic to democracy than Abuja Stadium. MKO wasted his life for peanuts.”

@trosky27, “GEJ renamed UNILAG to MAULAG, some ass lickers castigated him for doing so that that’s not a good way to honour Abiola. Buhari renamed Abuja stadium after Abiola and these same ass lickers are singing his praise. So Abiola is now honoured by naming a dead stadium after him?”

@davidokuson, “Just heard Buhari name Abuja stadium after MKO Abiola. Is it not the same abandoned stadium where cow are grazing, maybe this would make them give the necessary attention to the once magnificent stadium.”

@Damocleansword, “Renaming the Abuja Stadium after Abiola is good. Posthumously declaring him President-Elect and letting history reflect that would be much better.”

@abidounadeniran1, “Which would have been more appreciated The University of Lagos named after him or the Abandoned Abuja stadium.”

@Diegowhykay, “So they want to finally useless and forget D mighty Moshood Abiola name by naming the Useless Abuja Stadium after him. When last did a national football match or event occurred here.?”

@pamitimothy, “And you want us to celebrate that? What’s the importance of Abuja stadium to sporting activities in Nigeria presently? When was the last time the stadium hosted the super eagles. It’s better you don’t name anything after him than that dead stadium.”

@Fk149, “Nice gesture to Rename Abuja National Stadium after #MKOAbiola. But Pls can @MBuhari also make sure the Abuja Stadium is in proper shape. The Stadium cant even host Super Eagles matches because of its terrible state.”
