At the recently held Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA), New Telegraph newspaper which is barely three years old, shone like a star as it won in four categories, well ahead of older and well established newspapers. This will be the second time the newspaper will be winning four awards at the annual NMMA. Last year, it coasted home with four awards as well. Both The Punch and The Guardian newspapers won in only two categories each. Of the 24 nominations, New Telegraph had 13 nominations. The biggest winner of the night was The Nation Newspapers, which secured 8 wins out of their 17 nominations.
While the New Telegraph won in the Energy (Isioma Madike), Insurance (Isioma Madike), Agriculture (Oluwatosin Omoniyi) and Defence (Juliana Francis) categories, The Nation won in Culture and Tradition (Adekunle Yusuf), Oil and Gas (Adekunle Yusuf), Print Journalist, Columnist (Steve Osuji), Entertainment (Olatunji Ololade), Human Rights( Olatunji Ololade), Environment (Seun Akioye), Investigation(Seun Akioye) and Maritime (Oluwakemi Dada) categories. Other winners from the 22nd edition were Daily Trust Newspaper, whose editor (Nasir Lawal) won the Editor of the Year, while the newspaper was also crowned the Newspaper of the Year. For Punch Newspaper, it was (Dayo Oketola) in the Power category and (Arukaino Umukoro) in the Real Estate category.
Other winners in the broadcast categories were Channels Television, which won in the Television Station category as the Television Station of the year with the television station’s Ayoola Kazeem (Television Reporter of the year). There was also FRCN Abuja’s Adebayo Solomon (Radio Reporter of the Year), FRCN Network’ Pepple Ibifubara (Radio Presenter of the Year), Radio Continental’s Jones Usen (Radio Broadcaster of the Year), RayPower’s Yewande Iwuoha (Radio Production of the Year), VON’s Dominician Nwabufo (Radio Programme of the Year); DSTV/AfricaMagic’s Yvonne Bassey (Television Programme Presenter) and Ozioma Godwin Okoli(Television Production of the Year); Greg Odutayo (Television Drama of the Year) and RayPower (Radio of the year).
A total of 894 entries were received with more than 700 from the print category.
