Thirteen contestants were picked for the swimsuit round of the finals after a preliminary competition before being pruned to nine for the evening gown segment, and then to six. Rounding out the top six were Maxene Medina of the Philippines, Chalita Suansane of Thailand and Mary Esther Were of Kenya. Steve Harvey returned as show host, two years after he mistakenly announced the wrong winner.

Besides legendary R&B group, Boyz II Men and Grammy nominee, Flo Rida performing at the competition, this will be the 3rd time the pageant took place in the Philippines. The first one was in 1974 when Spain’s Amparo Muñoz was crowned while the second happened in 1994 with Sushmita Sen of India winning as Miss Universe.

Also, Miss USA, Deshauna Barber, became the first woman actively serving in the US Army to represent USA in the competition. More intriguing is the fact that Sierra Leonean Hawa Kamara made history as the first woman from the war torn country to enter the pageant.
