After spending seven years as a broadcaster, Veronica Effiong decided to leave it all to join the Nigeria Navy.
In a social media birthday post to herself, she said, “About a year ago, I made a life and career-changing decision. That was to join the Nigerian military. I must say, it has been a great journey so far.

“After my first degree in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos (The University of first choice and the Nation’s pride lol), I shortly did my master’s degree in the same course, all the while I was also concurrently working at WAP Tv in the broadcasting department.

“I had a good and amazing career in broadcasting for 7 years. Wow, so fast.
The Nigerian military has always held a funny mystery to me, in that I find it easy to see more men in the military than women. I found that a bit odd, then I began my research on it and surely, I found some interesting things.

“Apparently, In the military, there are only 3 women out of 10 people. Just 3! (that is fast changing I must say) That was it for me. ‘I have to be among that 3 percent,’ I said to myself. That was the turning point for me. Along with my flair for a more adventurous journey, a great broadcasting career, and my desire to be among the 3 of 10, I made the decision to switch careers.

“I went through the necessary process, training and all; now I’m a proud Officer of the Nigerian Navy. Ehennn, If you are one of the people who believe women in the military are emotionless or stone-cold, get in line to be flogged, Lol. But really, that’s not true. We still want to be loved, be pampered, be taken care of like every other woman. We’re not just about guns and hardcore training. So take note okay?

“Before the career change, I was a professional in the field of broadcasting and I do not intend to let that go. Broadcasting is my thing for life. It’ll interest you to know that I’m in the Information Department here. I intend to further my endeavors in broadcasting while serving the Nigerian Navy.

“Really, it’s still the same Veronica AKA Sweet16 as fondly called on TV, just a slight career shift, and I’ll make sure to make the best of it while I have fun of course. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME.”
