As the need for ventilators, otherwise known as respirators – an essential machine that aids breathing for patients who are physically unable to – increases globally with many countries like Nigeria, not even having enough due to the high number of coronavirus cases, two young Nigerians are coming to the rescue with their own brand of ventilators.

Young and innovative like most Nigerians, Dammy Onanuga and Funfere Koroye are both Design Engineers and Hardware Developers who decided to put their skills to use by designing and developing a fully functional respirator, albeit a low budget one. Aptly named Ambu bag respirator, the device which is made of plastic and metal works just as good as any high-end ventilator.

Unfortunately, the only hindrance to mass producing this is finance and hardware, something the duo are hoping would be a thing of the past if the Nigerian government looks inwards and support local talents.

With over five years’ experience, Funfere Koroye’s skills in hardware develpoment spans across several industries like FMCG, Fintech, Footwear, and Furniture. Some of his innovations include a diffuser system which repels insects by using a mist system and an automated timer, a tube-like water filter that fits into most regular plastic bottles with the sole purpose of distilling unclean water inexpensively etc. Globally recognised for his work, Koroye who is inspired by Steve Jobs and Dieter Rams, is a co-founder of a tech and design startup, the Nupe Project.

Dammy Onanuga like Koroye also has his skill-set spread across footwear, fashion, furniture, electronics etc.
