As part of the activities marking the commemoration of the 2019 World Diabetes Day, the LASUTH team for the World Diabetes Day in collaboration with the Lion’s Club, Lagos Chapter, paid a courtesy visit to the management of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on Wednesday, 13th of November, 2019, at the Board room of the hospital.
While receiving the team, the Director Clinical Services and Training, Dr. Ibrahim Mustapha welcomed warmly the Endocrinology Department of LASUTH and team, and recognized representatives of Lion’s Club. He stated that Diabetes is a non-communicable disease but it is rampant and this sensitization will reduce the scourge and other related diseases like hypertension. He further added that awareness like this helps more people know their health status and live a better life.
In his remark, the Head of Family Medicine Department, Dr. Olujimi Sodipo noted that Diabetes Awareness Day is usually celebrated on the 14th of November every year but due to some upcoming events on that day, it was agreed to be moved forward to the 12th of November this year.
He highlighted the importance of diabetes day and its awareness on people generally and the importance of knowing their health status. He added that this year’s awareness hopes to make impact in the society as they proceed to the Oba’s palace in Ipodo where free screening will be done for people living in the community.
In her response, an Endocrinologist, Dr. Olufunmilayo Adeleye acknowledged the support the team has been getting from the management as she presented a T shirt with inscription “World’s Diabetes Day 2019” to the Chief Medical Director, Director Clinical Service & Training, and the Director Hospital Administration & Human Resources.
The Lion’s Club District Governor, Lagos State Chapter, Mr. Wesley Kafidiya thanked the management of the hospital for its support as he cited the establishment of the Club and the reason for its expansion and wider vision since 1917 when diabetes awareness became part of it in1925.
He noted that this movement is concentrated on aggressive sensitization, advocacy and enlightenment of diabetes in Nigeria. He also added that apart from Lagos State, some other states in the Western region, Nigeria are also benefiting from the Club citing the current construction of a big Diabetes Centre in Ekiti.
