Lagos State House of Assembly is asking President Muhammadu Buhari to issue an Executive Order to rename monuments such as streets, gardens and other notable areas named after colonial masters or beneficiaries of the slave trade.
The House in a resolution reached after plenary also called on the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, to direct the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture to liaise with the Attorney-General/Commissioner for Justice to look at the Listed Sites in the Lagos state Preservation Law Chapter 86 Vol. 1 with a view to removing all vestiges of slave trade and colonial superiority as a stand against racism.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa and other members of the House agree that this would correct impressions fuelling the white supremacy movement and reduce incessant racist attacks and ill treatments of Black people across the world.
