For the first time, the Nigerian Navy has decorated Navy Captain Jamila Malafa with the rank of Commodore, which is equivalent to a Brigadier-General in the Nigerian army. With the rank, she becomes the very first female from the north to become a one-star general. The report quoted the Chief of Policy and Plans (COPP) at the navy headquarters in Abuja, Rear Admiral Henry Babalola, as calling the development a thing of pride. Malafa’s resume showed that she had been exposed to a lot courses and training during her career.
