Senator Ahmed Lawan from Yobe State, has been elected the Senate President of the 9th Senate, as he defeated his contestant, Senator Ali Ndume from Borno State. Although both are members of the ruling party, Lawan has always been the preferred candidate of the leadership of APC.

Counting so far showed that Ahmed Lawan was leading with 68 votes while counting continues. There are 107 senators currently at the Senate and Lawan has already scored over half of the votes

At least four governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Isiaka Oyetola (Osun), Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), and Bello Masari (Katsina), were at the senate to support the newly elected Senate President. Others are Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of the party, Lai Mohammed, former minister of information, are also at the chamber.
