Soon to be ex-husband of soul singer Jill Scott, Mike Dobson is borrowing a leaf from Mary J Blige’s estranged husband, Kendu Isaacs and is asking for half a million dollars in their divorce settlement despite the prenup they both signed when they got married in 2016. Mike Dobson claims that the signed prenup was signed without a lawyer and he is therefore entitled to the money he is asking for.
Mike Dobson wrote in court papers that three weeks before his wedding, Jill Scott and her lawyer pressured him to sign a prenup they drafted. He said he didn’t have a lawyer and felt coerced, but did so because he loved Scott. Dobson is firing back on Scott’s surprise 2017 divorce complaint, countersuing the singer and demanding their prenup declared invalid and their marital assets split down the middle.
The estranged husband said the prenup isn’t legal not only because he signed it under duress and without a lawyer, but also because Jill Scott violated the agreement’s confidentiality clause by speaking to the media about the divorce. Dobson said he’s entitled to half of their marital assets, plus $500,000 for the pain and suffering he allegedly endured during and after their year-long union.
Recall that Jill Scott filed for divorce 15 months after their marriage. The union produced no children. Jill however has a son with musician, Lil John Roberts who she was once engaged to. She was previously married to Lyzel Williams from 2001 to 2007.
Earlier this month, Dobson countersued Jill Scott for irreconcilable differences and inappropriate marital conduct, alleging that Scott was a monster wife who routinely tried to use money to control and silence him, treated him like the help and alienated him from his family and friends. He said Scott would accuse him of stealing stuff she’d eventually find and even went on dates with ‘intimate male friends’. He said Scott was known for emasculating the men in her life, referring to her son as ‘pretty’ instead of ‘handsome.’
Despite the alleged red flags, the husband said he wanted to make the marriage work and and they attended relationship counseling. But Dobson said out of the blue he came home to find Jill Scott had changed the locks and packed his stuff in boxes in the garage. Dobson said Scott’s alleged campaign of intimidation didn’t end after they split. He said that Scott has since spread his mugshot among their social circle and accused him of being gay, violent, jobless, unstable and a con artist.
He said the stress of the divorce and Scott’s alleged trash talking triggered a severe depression, damaged his reputation, caused mental anguish and he is now in intensive therapeutic treatment.
