The once beautiful friendship that existed between Oba Alayeluwa Saheed Ademola Elegushi, Kusenla III, the Elegushi of Ikate-Elegushi Kingdom and Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II, the Oniru of Iruland has come to a screeching halt and may likely remain so except they both reconsider the value of their friendship being more important than their bone of contention.
Not many are aware that the friendship between the two traditional rulers began over two decades ago when they both used to work for President Bola Tinubu as colleagues while he was the governor of Lagos State. While Oba Elegushi was the Special Assistant to Tinubu, Oba Lawal was his aide de camp ADC. But they became friends and nurtured the friendship such that it blossomed and extended to their wives, Olori Sekinat and Olori Maryam.
Despite the age difference between them with Oba Lawal being six years older at 55 later in July, they both share a strong bond; attending parties together, making the same fashion statement.
Ironically, their late fathers were good friends too. Oba Lawal’s father was a respected High Chief in Lagos during the reign of Oba Elegushis’s father, Oba Yekini Elegushi.
But all that seems to have allegedly come to an end, no thanks to the Lagos State House of Assembly meltdown that happened last month.
For many who do not know, Honourable Mojisola Meranda is a blood sibling to Oba Lawal, so naturally, she had his support when the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa got impeached and she took over his position. Similarly, when the duo of Meranda and Obasa began their tussle for the speakership position which led to a divided House, divided party, suspension of some House officers and a string of legal suits, Oba Lawal was solidly behind his sibling, rooting for her to emerge victorious in the political war.
However, sources disclosed to IvoryNG that while the war raged on, Oba Elegushi allegedly maintained an aloof stance, not openly supporting either of the parties involved. When President Bola Tinubu was forced to intervene, insisting that Obasa must return to his position as the Speaker, not a few individuals felt unhappy with the decision. These group of individuals felt his decision was justice miscarried but for obvious reasons decided to go with the flow grudgingly.
At this point, Oba Elegushi allegedly found his voice and told his friend and colleague that he supports the president’s decision for Obasa to return as Speaker. He allegedly advised him to accept the outcome of the political war and respect the president’s decision to avoid any problems. He reiterated to his friend allegedly, that were it not for the president, they wouldn’t be occupying their privileged positions and that alone he alleged, is all the more reason the outcome of the political war be accepted.
While Obasa is back as Speaker, Meranda is now his deputy.
