Houses destroyed, students trapped as explosion rocks Lagos

Many have been injured following an explosion in Abule Ado, Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State comprising of Surulere, Ijegun, Ikotun, Egbeda, Abule Ado, Okota, Isheri Olofin, FESTAC, Satellite Town, on Sunday, throwing residents of the area into a state of panic and buildings destroyed.

Also more than 20 students of Bethlehem Girls High School are believed to be trapped in their dormitory. A resident said some of the girls have been taken to the hospital while officials are still trying to get others out.

Another resident who made a video from the scene said the area has just one exit, and people are still trapped in the affected buildings.

Valentine Buraimoh, chairman of Amuwo Odofin local government area (LGA), said about three schools were affected.
“Churches were also affected. We have been able to rescue some but more are still trapped in the buildings,” he said.

Buraimoh, however, said the explosion was not caused by pipeline vandals, as the area is being monitored by soldiers stationed 30 metres away.
“It is not human. The soldiers didn’t see any vandal come close to the area. And some of the eyewitnesses that were in the area before the explosion happened said they observe that there was a gas leakage before the whole place went on fire.”

The cause of the explosion is unknown but an official of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) Nosa Okunbor, says that a team is heading to Abule Ado, trade fair axis for investigation of the alleged pipeline explosion.

Also, the Federal Fire Service are up and about with the situation. According to a resident, two fire service trucks had arrived the scene of the explosion but the fire was yet to be put out, adding that scores of people had been injured.
