A police corporal was reportedly shot dead after gunmen invaded a police station at Ikolaba area of Ibadan, Oyo state capital, on Friday. The deceased was among the officers on duty when the attackers struck.

Some other police officers were said to have sustained injuries in the incident which took the policemen by surprise. It was gathered that the gunmen shot sporadically into the station as they came into the premises.

Gbenga Fadyei, police public relations officer in the state, confirmed the incident but did not give details. He said policemen had been deployed in the area and normalcy has been restored. It is not clear those who launched the attack but Fadeyi said investigation is ongoing.

The attack happened at a time when efforts are being put in place to check the rising insecurity across the country.
