A Nigerian gate-man identified as Musa Usman, who rejected the offer of a house as parting gift from his Indian employer got his wish, for a borehole to service his community instead.

Musa Usman, who hails from Giljimmi, a Fulani settlement in Birniwa Local Government Area of Jigawa State, had served his Indian boss, Mr. V. Verghese, for 25 years and he was planning to leave his job to finally spend time with his family. To appreciate Usman’s services, Verghese decided to build a house for him.

However Usman, rejected the offer and asked that a borehole be sunk for his community which suffers from acute water shortage. Usman ho currently lives in a thatched house with his family, expressed no regret at turning down the offer of a new house just so members of his community can have clean water to drink.

In his address at the commissioning of the borehole, Mr. Verghese, said his decision for the parting gift was as a result of high degree of honesty exhibited by Usman while he was working for him, saying there was never a time when any of his items ever missed in the house for the period he had stayed with him.
“Musa served me diligently for 25 years. We will travel to India and leave our house under his care and behold, we will meet everything intact. He is indeed, a honest Nigerian.”

However, Akin Alabi, Nairabet owner and in coming member of the House of Representative, is of the opinion that the man’s decision was selfless but also very unwise. He said that the man could have accepted the house, sell it and sink a lot of boreholes with the money realized from the sale.
