The Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Oye Ekiti, FUOYE, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, has approved the constitution of an investigative panel on Tuesday’s protest by the students of the school and attack on Bisi Fayemi, wife of Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Two students were reportedly killed and several others including policemen injured while many vehicles were vandalised by the rampaging students and hoodlums during the protest.

Soremekun confirmed approval of the panel just as the Police Commissioner in Ekiti State, Asuquo Amba, said two students had been arrested by the law enforcement agents. An internal memorandum signed by the Director of Administration, Olatunbosun Odusanya to the VC states, “The VC may wish to recall the recent students misdemeanour of 10th September, 2019 and the consequent expanded management meeting, where it was resolved that an investigative panel must be set up to investigate the root causes of this action and to nip in the bud future occurrences.”

The memo, entitled Constitution of investigative panel, had suggested a 12-member committee chaired by Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, including representatives of Police; Department of State Services; Nigeria Security and Civil defence Corps; and National Association of Nigerian Students.

The Police commissioner, Amba, said on Thursday that two students of FUOYE Ekiti had been arrested in connection with the incident, saying two of his men were injured while two police vans were burnt during the attack. The police said, “Two persons have been arrested and one of them had confessed to the commission of the crime. When a crime is committed, we don’t fold our arms and watch. Even a civilian can effect an arrest if crime is committed in front of him and hand them (suspect) over to the police”.

Amba, who said that two rifles stolen from the police during the crisis had been retrieved, said, “It is sad that police are being attacked by criminals and the civilians who we are protecting. We won’t rest until the perpetrators of this dastardly attack are arrested and brought to justice.”
