With just a few hours to the end of the year and the exhilarating feeling of being on the brink of seeing another year, not a few would find the perfect reason to want to keep company with the bottles. While there are several reasons why some would want to down one too many drinks on a single night out on the town besides the feeling of stepping into the new year (the reasons are endless anyway), there is a usually a peculiar trait with anyone who is a victim of booze time – the dreaded hangover the morning after, filled with head pounding and body aching regret most times.  Even though the only way to cure a hangover is to drink in moderation, or avoid getting one altogether, some would prefer to go the easy route by just popping in medication. But there are a few hangover remedies that are easily within reach in your home to help alleviate the symptoms.

Water

While the thought of putting more liquid into your body during or after a night of excessive drinking may sound revolting, water can actually help since the body will be absolutely parched. Typically, the negative symptoms of alcohol derive from the dehydration of the body. Water can lessen the severity of headaches, fatigue and nausea. So drink as much as possible before you go to sleep to help lessen the blow the next morning.

Sprite

Sprite helps the body better metabolize alcohol by speeding up our ability to process the chemical compound believed to be the culprit for hangover symptoms. So chugging on sweet, caffeine-free soda, may provide solace during a hangover.

Ginger or peppermint tea

Sipping on ginger or peppermint tea is the perfect soothing brew for hangover-related nausea and stomach aches when used appropriately. And why not? Green tea is well known to be helpful for a number of things including liver detoxification, the prime victim of alcohol abuse.

Bananas and pretzels

Food high in potassium and salt like pretzels and bananas can cure a hangover as they are good sources to prevent further dehydration. Other foods that contain potassium are potatoes and milk.

Coffee

Not only will coffee further dehydrate one, it will force adrenaline up which will give you a false energy boost until the hangover dissipates.

Toast or Crackers

Eating carbohydrates can help halt the roller coaster in your stomach by bringing your blood sugar levels back up the morning after, leaving you feeling less irritable and full of vigour.

Exercise

Go for a light walk, run, or swim. The endorphins released during exercise can help improve your mood, which is important if you are feeling anxious as a result of being hung over. Exercise also speeds up the process of metabolizing the alcohol, helping it leave your system faster. However be sure to properly hydrate both before and after exercising to prevent further fluid loss.

PS: The best cure is prevention. However,

  • You’re an adult, you know to drink responsibly.
  • Just in case you forget, limit your drinks to about one every hour. If you drink faster, that is more than one every hour, your blood alcohol level rises faster and you risk a hangover.
  • Eat before you drink
  • According to a research, moderate drinking is defined as two drinks a day. More than five in one sitting is considered heavy drinking. So think before you order that extra round.
