First City Monument Bank PLC,FCMB, has absolved its erstwhile managing director, Adam Nuhu, of any wrong doing in the paternity scandal involving him, a former staff, Moyo Thomas and her late husband, adding that he did not breach any of the bank’s policies.

Nuhu had been enmeshed in a paternity scandal months ago as a result of his romantic affair with Thomas, who was married at the time she was an employee of the bank.

A petition addressed to the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, asking it to look into Nuhu’s abuse of office and demanding his removal, was signed by over 10,000 people. The petition alleged that Thomas’ estranged husband died in December 2020 after realizing their two children were not his.

Thomas had denied informing her husband the children were not his, describing the allegation as “malicious”. She however did not comment on the alleged affair.

This prompted FCMB to ask Nuru to proceed on compulsory leave to allow for a thorough probe into the allegation. Nuhu eventually exited the bank, cutting his five year tenure to four years.

The board of the bank said Nuhu left at the “end of service”, but did not give details of its findings or why he left ahead of time. In its statement, the FCMB board thanked Mr Nuhu for his “years of dedicated service”.

“The board had earlier reviewed media allegations made in late 2020 against the former MD and did not establish any contravention of its policies,” the bank said in a statement on Tuesday.

FCMB announced its first female Managing Director Yemisi Edun, who has been in acting capacity for months. Edun, a former executive director and chief financial officer of the bank, took over tentatively in January to allow a formal inquiry into the allegations against Nuhu.
