With the rising incidence of domestic violence against women, the wife of the Ooni of Ife, Olori Wuraola Ogunwusi decided to set up a campaign to help create awareness against this social malaise and put a stop to it. The campaign, #1in3Africacampaign is beginning to gather momentum already.
In her campaign message, the Oloris said, “Violence against women is not just a threat to women and girls in Nigeria, it is a crime against humanity. This issue has become a growing epidemic and a prevalent topic in our community. This campaign is a call for justice, a call to rise up, a call of sisterhood and unity amongst Nigerians to lift up the women around us and let them know that they are not alone.’
Continuing she said, “It is our God given right, not just to show empathy towards victims but to set forth action to help them find their voice. Silencing the abused is also a form of abuse. And men also have a crucial role to play in speaking out against violence. This awareness also includes demanding a change of the cultural and social stigmas that perpetuate the problem. Together, we can help those who need us.”
Little wonder she decided to make the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as one of the headliners of the campaign. Others who have joined in championing the campaign are actresses and domestic violence victims; Tonto Dikeh and Mercy Aigbe.
