Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk just became the third-richest person in the world, surpassing Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.
After a steep climb from Tesla’s stock split on Monday, Elon Musk claimed the third spot on Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index with a net worth of $115 billion as of market close on Aug. 31. He is now wealthier than Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who has a fortune of $110.8 billion, and comes in behind Microsoft cofounder, Bill Gates at No. 2 and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos at No. 1, whose fortune has surpassed $200 billion.
The Tesla and SpaceX founder now has a $4 billion lead on Zuckerberg’s $111 billion net worth and trails Bill Gates for second place by $10 billion. The jump comes nearly two weeks after Musk moved into the fourth spot on the index. Tesla stock is up nearly 480% year-to-date and now holds a market cap of over $450 billion.
Despite his massive accumulation of wealth, Musk has frequently spoken about his disinterest in his own personal fortune. Musk doesn’t appear to spend as lavishly as other billionaire CEOs, with his LA real estate portfolio appearing to be his biggest personal expenditure. Musk has signed the giving pledge vowing to donate the majority of his wealth in his lifetime or in his will.
