The speaker of the Ekiti State house of assembly, Funminiyi Afuye, has passed on.

Afuye, who represents Ikere constituency 1, died on Wednesday, October 19, around 6 pm at the age of 66.

A member of the house, while confirming the development, said that Afuye died of cardiac arrest at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti.

Afuye was said to have died after attempts by medical doctors to save his life failed.

He appeared at the swearing-in ceremony of Governor Biodun Oyebanji on Sunday, October 16, and was full of life when he accompanied the new governor to inspect some ongoing road projects in the state capital on Tuesday afternoon, October 18.

The source said that, “Our speaker and leader is dead. We learnt that he developed sudden complications on Wednesday, and was rushed to the hospital where he died later in the evening.

“He was full of life in the last few days. In fact, Afuye was at the swearing-in ceremony of Governor Oyebanji on Sunday.

“We were told that he died of cardiac arrest on Wednesday evening,” he added.
