Sunday night was Drake’s night at the annual Billboarf Music Awards held this morning in Las Vegas, Nevada and hosted by Ludacris and former High School Musical star, Vanessa Hudgens. The rap mogul took home 13 awards including ‘Top Artist’, breaking Adele’s previous record of 12, for most prizes picked up by an artist in a single night.
Similarly, Nigeria’s top singer Wizkid equally scooped several honours alongside Drake. He got three awards making him the first African to get a Billboard Music Award. Wizkid’s collabo with Drake and Tyla won for Top Streaming Strong (Audio) for the song, ‘One Dance’ as well as Top R&B song and also the Top R&B collaboration.
However, the song failed to win the Top Selling Song. The work was lost to Justin Timberlake, ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling!’.
The award ceremony was a hefty, three-hour-plus show stacked with live performances from Nicki Minaj, Drake, Miley Cyrus, The Chainsmokers, Lorde, Imagine Dragons, John Legend and Florida Georgia Line, Sam Hunt, Camila Cabello, Halsey and Julia Michaels.
There were tributes as well; Celine Dion, who belted out ‘My Heart Will Go On’ to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the song’s release as well as Cher who was the winner of the ICON award. The 71 year old superstar performed her 1998 hit ‘Believe’ and ‘If I Could Turn Back Time.’ There were also remembrances of the late Biggie and Chris Conell.
