Unless something is done to stem the apparent clash in the date chosen to honor the memory of late Herbert Wigwe, the former group chief executive officer (GCEO) of Access Holdings Plc by his immediate family members and his former business partner and friend, we may be looking at another unpalatable scenario, akin to the accusations and counter accusations Nigerians witnessed among his family members over the late banker’s estate.

Next Monday, February 10, will mark exactly one year since Wigwe, his wife Chizoba, their son Chizi, and their friend, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter accident in Southern California, United States. The crash occurred over the Mojave Desert between 10 pm and 11 pm on Friday, February 9, 2024, California time, that is between 7 am and 8 am on February 10, 2024, Nigerian time.

While his immediate family has fixed the 9th of February to honour him in a series of activities, there are indications that Access Holdings/Access Bank are allegedly planning a memorial on the same day.

The family in collaboration with Wigwe University will hold a memorial church service at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, in Isiokpo, Rivers State, and a reception on campus on Sunday February 9. Traditional rulers and members of the Isiokpo community are expected to attend.

Meanwhile, IvoryNG gathered that the institutions Wigwe co-founded are allegedly, also planning a memorial to be held on the same date but at the Eko Convention Center, Lagos at 4.30pm prompt.

While some are of the opinion that holding separate memorials leaves a bad taste in the mouth, others believe there is absolutely nothing wrong especially because of the position Wigwe held both in the banking industry and the society at large.
