The chief whip of the Nigerian senate, Senator Olusola Adeyeye who spoke during the plenary session at the red chamber yesterday, stated that Nigeria’s constitution of 1999 can never give us peace, progress and unity. The Osun born Senator who was reacting to the  persistent killings in Zamfara state, blamed the 1999 Constitution which according to him is responsible for the violence and crisis.

Senator Adeyeye said, “The truth is whatever a man sows, so he will reap. The Constitution cannot give us peace and security. The official name of this country is the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but we do not operate under a true federalist system.”

He also took a swipe at his colleagues, who according to him do not have the spine to speak up about the evils projected by the 1999 constitution. “We failed to federalize the police system in this Senate because we lack the courage and tenacity to start what is making other nations work.”Every crime is local and the solution to every crime is local. We must revisit the revenue formula in order to ensure that we give more funding to the state”, he added.
