President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday performed the investiture of national honours on heroes of democracy; Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, late Chief Gani Fawehinmi as well as late Chief MKO Abiola. He also tendered a national apology to the family of late Chief Moshood Abiola, for the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election which was adjudged to have been won by Abiola. The president in addition conferred the national honour, Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR, the highest national honour exclusively reserved for presidents and heads of states on late MKO Abiola.

He also conferred on late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, renowned lawyer and human rights activist, who was at the fore front of the battle for the actualistaion of the June 12 mandate, with the second highest honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, GCON post humously. Abiola’s running mate in the election, Baba Gana Kingibe, was conferred with GCON as well.
