The Kano State government has said that President Muhammadu Buhari gave consent to ease the lockdown imposed on the state due to coronavirus.
President Muhammadu Buhari in his address to the nation last week ahd imposed a two week lockdown while easing the lockdowns in Lagos, Ogun States and Abuja.
But Governor Umar Ganduje decided to ease the lockdown in his own state despite the rising number of COVID-19 patients. The Governor had announced that Mondays and Thursdays would be lockdown free days, especially between 10 am and 4pm to enable residents shop for food.
The governor’s spokesperson, Salihu Yakasai, had in a brief statement said during the period, movement of persons in the state would be limited to 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. He also said during the period wearing of face mask in public will be mandatory. He advised people to observe personal hygiene and maintain social distance to prevent the spread of the disease.
Following this, the governor had come under attack for relaxing the lockdown order in the state despite a record of 92 new cases. The backlash from Nigerians forced the State Ministry of Health to announce that that lifting of the lockdown was with the president’s permission. It tweeted,
“@KanostateNg relaxes #lockdown on Mondays & Thursdays from 10:00am – 4:00pm with the consent of the President @MBuhari. The General public is to adhere strictly to #COVID19Kano protocols as given by the health professionals.”
