President Muhammadu Buhari after facing growing criticisms over his lopsided political appointments which mostly favoured Muslims against Christians and ignited an age-long debate and divide between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria, has appointed Edward Lametek Adamu, a Christian from Gombe State, as the new deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to replace Mr. Suleiman Barau who retired last month. Adamu, who was once the Director in charge of the Strategy Management Department of the CBN, is currently the Director of Human Resources with the Bank, a position he has held since 2016. He has more than 25 years experience working with the central bank, which has seen him serving in almost every aspect of its operations.
His appointment is however subject to confirmation by the Senate which had held up the confirmation of another Deputy Governor, Aishah Ahmad, to the Board of the Bank, as well as all other appointees by Buhari following his refusal to remove Ibrahim Magu as Chairman of the EFCC, after his confirmation was turned down by the upper legislature.
