Outgoing lawmaker for the Kaduna Central District, Senator Shehu Sani, has warned the federal government against giving the country’s resources to Fulani herdsmen under the umbrella body of Miyetti Allah. The senator said whatever resources are required for securing the provinces under bandit attacks should be given only to security agencies.
Although Senator Sani welcomed the idea of enlisting the aide of cattle herders of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) to checkmate the increasing criminality of bandits in some northern states, he is uncomfortable with doing more than that.
In a tweet on Sunday, May 5, the outspoken senator drew the line in the relationship between the federal government’s security agencies and Miyetti Allah at giving them ‘public resources’. Although the lawmaker did not state his reasons for drawing the line, he however saluted the idea of using herders to stop bandits as a good move.
Recall that the Inspector-General of Police Muhammed Adamu had disclosed that Fulani elders on the platform of MACBAN had agreed to provide support in getting rid of bandits from northern states. The minister of internal affairs, General Abdulrahman Danbazau, the police chief and other top government officials met with Fulani elders in Birnin Kebbi.
Their meeting was sequel to the order of President Muhammadu Buhari to the security chiefs to dialogue with leaders from volatile states to end banditry. Besides, there has been rumours of money exchanging hands between the federal government an the association.
