A formidable coalition of political leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and several key figures from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has emerged in opposition to President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.
At a press conference on Thursday, prominent opposition figures gathered to signal their intent to challenge the current administration. Among those in attendance were Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, represented by Yunusa Tanko, as well as former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
Others included the National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties, Peter Ahmeh, and Segun Showunmi, the convener of The Alternative.
Additionally, several high-profile political figures who could not attend the event sent in their apologies. These included former governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), and the immediate past APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, among others.
The coalition’s formation marks a significant political shift, setting the stage for an intense contest leading up to the 2027 presidential election.
