A 60-year-old Catholic priest, Rev Fr Edmond Nwagbala, was on Saturday burnt beyond recognition in a fire outbreak at St. Peter Claver Catholic Parish, Nnewichi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State. It was learnt that the fire, which occurred around 4am, affected part of the church’s residential building.

It was learnt that the cleric was sleeping when the fire started. Spokesman for the police in the state, Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed the incident said the cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained.

Mohammed said, “Around 4 am, there was a fire outbreak at St. Peter Claver Catholic Parish Nnewichi in the Nnewi North LGA of Anambra State. The inferno, which its cause has yet to be ascertained, affected part of the church’s residential building.

“The parish priest, Rv Fr Edmond Nwagbala, aged about 60, was burnt beyond recognition inside his room on the premises. The victim was rushed to the hospital for medical attention but  was certified dead on arrival  and the  corpse was deposited at the mortuary for postmortem examination. The Commissioner of Police, John Abang, has ordered  a discreet investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
