The people of Kogi Central senatorial district have launched a recall process against their representative in the Senate, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, citing dissatisfaction with her performance.

The move, initiated on Wednesday, it was learned, is being carried out across party lines, reflecting a growing lack of confidence in her ability to address key issues such as poverty, infrastructure, and education.

A constituent who spoke on the matter anonymously stated that the recall process is expected to last two days, covering all polling units across the five local government areas in the district. As part of the procedure, voters will be required to sign a petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, requesting her removal from office.

Upon receiving the petition, INEC will verify the signatures to ensure that they belong to registered voters within the senatorial district before proceeding with the next steps in the recall process.

Stakeholders behind the initiative claim that repeated attempts to engage with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan on critical constituency matters were met with indifference.

The signature collection process is already underway in four local government areas—Okehi, Okene, Ajaokuta, and Ogori/Magongo—while Adavi LGA is scheduled to conduct its exercise on Thursday, March 20. Reports indicate a high turnout in Okene, Okehi, and Ajaokuta, while Ogori/Magongo recorded a lower participation rate.

However, the recall effort has faced opposition from a group known as the Good People of Kogi Central, which has warned residents against participating in the process.

In a statement signed by Hon. Abdulrahman Badamasuiy, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s campaign director-general, the group described the senator as a performing lawmaker and urged constituents not to provide voter card details or sign any documents under the guise of empowerment initiatives.

Badamasuiy cautioned that the recall attempt is a political ploy and advised constituents to remain vigilant against efforts to undermine Akpoti-Uduaghan’s representation.
