In no distance time, Nigerians will begin to see the aircrafts owned by United Nigeria Airlines, dotting the air space. Owned by businessman, Dr. Obiorah Okonkwo, the airline already has two aircrafts in its fleet, both of which have been aptly named; Our mother Mary of Miracle, and Blessed Iwene Tansi, named after the late reverend father who was beatified by Pope John Paul the second when he visited Nigeria in 1997.

But who exactly is Obiorah Okonkwo? Where did he emerge from and what are his antecedents? A devout Catholic, Obiora Okonkwo who started off as a trader in Onitsha is an intellectual with academic background in economics with special appeal in political economy. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Political Science, with distinction, from the Russian Academy of Science, Institute of World Economy and International Relations, Moscow, and a Professional Fellowship Doctorate from the Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria. He had earlier earned a Master of Science Degree in Economics, also with distinction, from the Russian Peoples Friendship University in Moscow and a first class in economics from the Russian Peoples Friendship University in Moscow.

A philanthropist and a charismatic leader, his humility is said to be disarming. Okonkwo is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (FNIPR), Chartered Economists (FCE) and CareerNation Institute, New York, USA. Okonkwo is also the Chairman of The Dome Entertainment Limited, owners of The Dome and parent company of The Summit, Bowling Alley, Noni’s Pizza, Paradiso, Wesley Snipes, Satchmo, Camelot Spa and The Francis Hotel.

A strong promoter of the Igbo culture and tradition in Anambra state, he has published several works in his name.
