Following his woeful outing at the 2023 general elections where he attempted to return to the House of Representatives to continue with his representation of Eti-Osa Federal Constituency in Lagos State on the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC, the state’s governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has thrown Babajide Obanikoro, son of former senator and minister of state for defence, a lifeline by appointing him his Special Adviser on Parastatals Monitoring.
According to the governor, Obanikoro’s appointment aligns with his strategy to strengthen oversight and performance within state parastatals, ensuring the efficient delivery of public services under his administration
Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence in Obanikoro’s ability to align with his development agenda and contribute effectively to achieving the goals of the administration.
Recall that following the double tragedy that befell Obanikoro and his father, it looked like they were finished politically as they both did not clinch the tickets they were gunning for.
The senior Obanikoro was gunning for a seat in the senate, but he was unfortunately trounced by Idiat Adebule, a former deputy governor of Lagos State.
The junior Obanikoro had failed to secure the ticket at the primary having lost to Oyekanmi Elegushi, a sibling of Oba Saheed Elegushi of Ikate Kingdom. Elegushi beat him by two votes to emerge the winner.
However, days to the actual election, party chieftains prevailed on Oyekanmi to relinquish the ticket to the younger Obanikoro who is an older horse in the game. While pledging his loyalty to the party, Oyekanmi appealed to his supporters to respect the decision of the party and ensure that all candidates of the party are returned unopposed in the 2023 general election.
Unfortunately, the younger Obanikoro lost to Thaddeus Attah of the Labour Party.
