Over a year after Nordica Fertility Centre, one of the top In Vitro Fertilisation, IVF clinics in Nigeria celebrated its 20th anniversary, they have reason to celebrate again as the first baby ever recorded at the Lagos facility where it all started recently clocked 20 years.
The team at Nordica led by its founder, Dr Abayomi Ajayi and his wife, Ranti, first woke up the celebrant, Julian Oluchukwu via a video call to send him birthday wishes. Thereafter, the founding couple spent time with the celebrant as they regaled him with stories surrounding his birth.
At a time when IVF was still largely considered a taboo in Nigeria, Nordica alongside two other prominent fertility clinics, braved the odds to offer succor to couples who couldn’t procreate normally. Within that time and now, the clinic has successfully birthed over 5000 babies through IVF.
A lot has changed since Dr Ajayi first started out 20 years ago with more IVF clinics springing up due to the huge demand for IVF in Nigeria as many people are constantly seeking assistance at fertility clinics due to childlessness and threats in their marriages. Although Dr Ajayi is glad he runs a successful IVF clinic, he attributes his skill and expertise to a burden to see him touch lives and create an impact.
Following the success of his fertility clinic, Dr Ajayi has added another service that is most sought after, High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment for fibroids. HIFU is a form of treatment that converts waves of ultrasound energy to heat to burn off fibroids. He said the treatment option saves patients from complications associated with surgery and other methods, very unlike traditional methods.
HIFU targets and destroys fibroid tissue without removing it, reducing the risk of complications. The HIFU machine generates sound waves, which focuses on a particular area at a specific intensity and power; and the generated thermal energy kills the fibroids.
