The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Monday Okpebholo, has been declared the winner after securing more votes than any other candidate in Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State.
According to the final vote count announced by the Independent Electoral Commission on Sunday, Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, came second with 247,274, while Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata is a distant third with 22,763 votes.
The APC candidate also won in 11 of the state’s 18 local governments, according to results announced on Sunday at the INEC headquarters in Benin, the Edo State capital.
The Returning Officer, Prof. Faruk Kuta, declared Okpebholo as the winner of the poll at the collation centre in Benin City, the state capital, on Sunday.
Okpebholo also satisfied the key criterion of having at least 25 per cent of the votes in at least two-thirds (12) of the state’s 18 local government areas.
