Intending travellers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos State on Monday, June 3, were left stranded as all entry points into the domestic terminal of the airport were inaccessible.

The nationwide strike called by the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, was responsible for the blockage of the entry points.

Similarly, the national grid has also been shut down.

This was disclosed in a statement by the General Manager (Public Affairs) of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, Ndidi Mbah.

It will be recalled that members of organized labour on Friday, May 31, declared a nationwide indefinite strike after the Federal Government refused to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000 to N497,000.

A meeting between the National Assembly leadership and the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress had ended without a resolution, paving the way for a nationwide strike on Monday.

The meeting, presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House of Representatives Speaker Tajuddeen Abbas, aimed to persuade labour to shelve its planned strike action over minimum wage demands.

Despite appeals from the Senate President, the TUC President, Festus Osifo, stated that the strike will commence as planned, pending discussions with their organs.

“We don’t have the powers to call off the strike action. For now, the strike action will commence, while we discuss with our organs,” Osifo said.

The meeting was attended by top government officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Budget and National Planning.

Meanwhile, aviation unions have already announced their intention to join the strike and the withdrawal of services at airports.
