Akin Rotimi, the spokesperson of the House of Representatives, has criticized Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, the Minister of Women Affairs, for her recent comment advising women to remain silent during arguments with their husbands.

During a conference of commissioners of state ministries of women affairs, Kennedy-Ohanenye reportedly suggested that women should act like fools during heated conversations with their spouses. In response, Rotimi, who represents Ekiti North Federal Constituency 1, expressed his disagreement with the minister’s advice.

Rotimi emphasized that the minister’s recommendation overlooks the complexity of the issue. He asserted that it fails to address the root causes of violence and may perpetuate damaging stereotypes. Notably, many victims of gender-based violence are already submissive and quiet, yet they still face abuse. Rotimi highlighted the importance of mutual respect and understanding in marriages but cautioned against using it as an excuse for violence or abuse.

As a conservative individual shaped by his Christian faith and Yoruba culture, Rotimi acknowledged that gender roles exist but clarified that neither the Bible nor their culture supports the subjugation or abuse of women. He urged the minister and all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue and action to combat gender-based violence, encourage victims to speak out, and ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals.
