General Colin Powell, a former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is dead.

He died on Monday morning following complications from Covid 19.

He was aged 84.

A statement by his family said he was fully vaccinated and had gone to thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their caring treatment.

Powell was one time a favourite to be President. He was later best known for his assertion in Congress that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, which led to the invasion in 2003.

A Republican, he famously supported Democratic Candidate Barack Obama over Republican candidate John McCain in the historic 2008 presidential election.
